Newsletter II 10 eng

Sended on: 04/29/2010

Dear friends,
Here is our quarterly newsletter: should you like to not receive it again, please reply with "remove" in the subject.

About the Camp

We will not bore you with too many words in this newsletter and will images talk by themselves.

Green, green, green...

What a fantastic blessing we had: 600 mm of rains since January 1st! It is above the entire average yearly rainfall. All is absolutely green, and the proper rainy season should still be coming (this month).
Do not miss the opportunity to see the Chyulu and Tsavo so green. It was since last El Nino (1998) that we did not see such tall green grass, flowers, new birds and elephants feasting on the ipomea flowers.
The following photos are all courtesy of Nicola Pillon, who spent a week with us at Campi ya Kanzi.

The following photos were taken just the other day, by Veronika Borchers, of Maasai Wilderness Conservation Fund. They really show what a paradise the Chyulu have turn into.

And these are Lucas favorite photos of his recent safaris:

This is the time to come and visit

With everything so exceptionally lush and blossoming, this is the moment to come and spend a week with us. Stay one week and will pass you a 30% discount.
A week at Campi ya Kanzi will therefore cost $415 per person per day, instead of $595 (total discounted cost for the week for one person: $2,905. Add $700 conservation fee)
A week at Kanzi House will cost your group (Kanzi House accommodate up to 10 guests) $5,000 per day, instead of $6,900 per day (total discounted cost per week for a group of up to 10 guests: $35,000). Add $200 conservation fee per person per day.
And this is the time to spend at least a full day in Tsavo. We have not seen it so green in a decade. A day excursion is $150 per person, inclusive of Park fees.
With return flights from Nairobi a one week with us, inclusive of a day in Tsavo, will cost you:

  • $4,420 while staying at Campi ya Kanzi
  • $5,715 while staying at Kanzi House in a group of 10 guests

About the Trust

The Trust is facing huge pressure on its Simba Project. Last year drought has sensibly decreased the overall number of livestock, therefore increasing their price in the market.
Rightfully the Maasai are asking us to review our compensation values: remember, the Simba Project is all about saving the lives of the lions, by reimbursing to the Maasai any preyed livestock.
Some of you may have seen in the internet worrying news about lions killed near us. They are true. Warrios in a nearby Maasai reserve speared two lionesses.
Five other lions near Amboseli National Park were killed, in retaliation for their predation on a cow.
We are pleased to let all of you know that we have not lost any of our lions, regardless their continuous predation on the Maasai livestock.
We would like to review the price we pay for the livestock killed by lions, to ensure the Maasai of our reserve will keep respecting Simba Project.
If you can, please donate something to Simba Project: you can do it on line http://www.maasai.com/How+to+help.asp

Online you can join another meaningful effort: see how Edward Norton and Glen Hansard are trying to help MWCT with a vehicle, to ensure our game scouts can monitor the entire 280,000 reserve. http://www.crowdrise.com/maasaivillagersneeda/fundraiser/edwardnortonWith all our best, Luca, and the Campi ya Kanzi team
